WGS Technology is no stranger in the gaming space. Expectations for 1st and 10 were a little higher than others. With that being said, right away the feel is straight out of the early 90's. Nothing fancy, simplistic; yet lines are tight and the symbols fit the era. It's that type of game that seems old, has stood the test of time, and was likely ahead of its time when released. It's kind of like that old reliable punter; in a sentimental sort of way.
Just after a few spins, you can tell this slot must have seen a focus on playability and overall game dynamics. Also, as is the case with the Minnesota Vikings; always playing well, but never winning. The reel spin is smooth and met with a powerful thud as they come to a stop. The music is subtle; jazzy even. Which is rather nice and a welcome addition to the solid gameplay. Auto-play is basic and just takes over the mouse clicking, no stop loss/win feature. This is unfortunate, but not a deal breaker considering the playability factor.
The symbols, all of them, need to be overhauled. Differentiating between cheerleader/coach/player takes a trained eye, and is one of few negatives taken from this machine. Individual audio from the characters help differentiate, but it will take a few spins to adjust.
This game offers 3 bonus rounds, and each one holds their own well. The free spin bonus is triggered by 3 coach symbols. Your rewarded with 5 free spins and possible retriggers. 5 spins are hardly an attractive bonus round, but the payouts were a pleasant surprise.
The "go for it" bonus is just a glorified double up. When 3 lineman symbols trigger the bonus, your option is to punt or go for it. Essentially, punting is claiming your original win, or you may double your win by going for it. There is also a brief video that is concern for minor entertainment.
The last bonus round is the cheerleader bonus. This one is fun in its own sort of old-school type way. When 3 cheerleaders appear on reels 1, 3, and 5, you activate the bonus round. This consists of driving your team down the field with three plays. You have to pick either to run, pass, or do a quarterback sneak. Each outcome is at random, with what seems like random prizes. I played one with a touchdown and won considerably more than one without.
